ICOM Europe Collaborates on GO! Borderless Conference in Nova Gorica and Gorizia Conference

ICOM Europe Announces Collaboration on the GO! Borderless Conference: Redefining Museum Narratives and Inclusivity 18–21 May 2025, Nova Gorica – Gorizia | ECoC GO! 2025

ICOM Europe is proud to collaborate on the upcoming international conference “GO! Borderless – Borderless Museums: Redefining Museum Narratives and Inclusivity,” to be held from 18 to 21 May 2025 in Nova Gorica, Slovenia, and Gorizia, Italy. This event is part of the European Capital of Culture 2025 initiative, which features a unique cross-border collaboration between Nova Gorica and Gorizia, alongside Chemnitz, Germany.

Under the slogan “GO! Borderless,” this groundbreaking cultural partnership aims to create a shared cultural experience that transcends borders, inviting everyone to explore and celebrate the rich, intertwined heritage of both cities. The collaboration between Nova Gorica and Gorizia represents the first-ever European Capital of Culture to involve two cities from different countries, emphasizing a united vision for cultural exchange and innovation.

The significance of this partnership is profound. These two towns, once symbols of peaceful coexistence, multilingualism, and multiculturalism, were deeply affected by the conflicts of the 20th century. Now, as they reclaim the title of European Capital of Culture, Nova Gorica and Gorizia are reconnecting with their shared roots, laying the foundation for renewed dialogue and cooperation in an era marked by societal challenges.

Central to this initiative is the creation of EPIC (European Platform for the Interpretation of the 20th Century), a participatory museum dedicated to promoting cultural dialogue and democratic values. EPIC will serve as a vibrant cultural hub, empowering the local border communities to share their narratives and perspectives. Its focus on participatory methodologies aims to foster unity and inclusivity, moving beyond divisive historical narratives to create a museum space shaped by the people, for the people.

The GO! Borderless conference will focus on reimagining the role of museums in contemporary society, exploring how they can become inclusive educational spaces that promote global understanding and cooperation. The event will provide a platform for museum professionals from diverse backgrounds to share ideas, best practices, and innovative approaches to breaking away from traditional models.

Key discussion topics will include:

  • Exchanging Best Practices: Museums as Borderless Platforms of Knowledge
  • Ethics in Museums: Curatorial Roles and Dilemmas
  • Museums Serving Their Communities: Building Connections
  • Hidden Frontiers: Plural Communities Reflecting on History and Shaping the Future
  • Transnational and Cross-Border Museum Collaboration: Strengths, Weaknesses, Challenges, and Opportunities
  • Museums and the European Capital of Culture: Sharing Experiences and Best Practices
